Let’s Mobilize to Feed the Hungry!
Dear Temple Beth Torah Family,
Times are tougher than ever for our neighbors who are struggling to make ends meet. Here are two great ways you can help:
Saturday, May 10th is Mailbox Food Collection Day
Island Harvest is once again teaming up with the National Association of Letter Carriers in their Annual Food Drive. All you need to do is leave non-perishable food items near your mailbox on that day. Your letter carrier will be collecting the food when he or she delivers your mail on May 10th.
Imagine how much food can be gathered for the Island’s needy families if each one of us put even one item by our mailbox when we went out to get our newspaper that morning!!
Volunteers Are Needed To Sort and Pack From May 10-15
Now imagine the logistics of handling all that donated food! Island Harvest is lining up donated warehouse space in central Long Island where the letter carriers will bring all the food. Lots of volunteers will be needed there to sort and package the food to be distributed to agencies serving hungry people on Long Island.
We are organizing two groups of volunteers from Temple Beth Torah to go together during the following shifts (minimum age is 13):
· Saturday, May 10th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
· Tuesday, May 13th from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
(Note that Rabbi Gellman has canceled his morning Torah class to encourage
members to go instead to the Island Harvest warehouse to help sort and package food.)
There is a limit of 25 people per shift. Other shifts are available on Saturday evening, all day and evening on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and in the morning on Thursday.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact me (at 631-643-6480 or tschimek@paulweiss.com) or feel free to download the registration form directly from the Island Harvest website at www.islandharvest.org.
